Who can apply for U.S. citizenship?

U.S. citizenship offers an individual the right to vote in America, live abroad with a lifelong right to return, and the ability to petition for certain family members to immigrate to the US. However, getting approved for citizenship isn't all that easy. To become a US citizen you must undergo a process called naturalization. The eligibility requirements for naturalization include the following:

  • You must have maintained a legal permanent resident status in the US for at least five years (or three years in some cases)

  • You must have resided in the United States for at least five (or three in some cases) consecutive years preceding the date of your application

  • You must have been physically present in the US for at least half of the time during the five/three year period preceding the date of your application

  • You must be at least 18 years old and be able to read, write, understand, and speak the English language

  • During your citizenship interview, you must pass a test on U.S. history, laws, and regulations.

At our immigration law firm in San Francisco, we help our clients with their US Citizenship application for an affordable fee.

The application process for U.S. citizenship

USCIS requires all individuals who intend to apply for US citizenship to fill out Form N-400 and file that along with a copy of their green card, birth certificate, and other documentation depending on the unique situation. Once you file your application, you may have to wait for many months before you receive further communication from USCIS. You will be then invited to a biometrics fingerprinting appointment, after which you will participate in an interview with an officer at USCIS.

During the interview, the USCIS officer will test your English language abilities and your understanding of US history and government. USCIS allows special accommodations for applicants with disabilities. If you do well during your interview, you will get an invitation to participate in an oath ceremony. Once you are sworn in at the oath ceremony, you will receive a certificate of naturalization and officially become a citizen of the United States.
